Smalls was initially loyal to the Confederacy, but he soon realized that the war was an opportunity for slaves to gain their freedom. In May 1862, Smalls and seven other slaves hatched a plan to steal the Confederate steamship Planter. Smalls was a skilled pilot, and he knew that the Planter could be used to help the Union Navy.
