Robert Smalls was born on April 5, 1839, in Beaufort, South Carolina. Small’s mother, Lydia, worked as a housemaid for the McKees. Small’s father, Isaac, was a free black man who worked as a carpenter.
Smalls was a bright and curious child. He learned to read and write at a young age, and he was eager to learn about the world. In 1861, the Civil War began. Smalls was initially loyal to the Confederacy, but he soon realized that the war was an opportunity for slaves to gain their freedom. In May 1862, Smalls and seven other slaves hatched a plan to steal the Confederate steamship Planter. Smalls was a skilled pilot, and he knew that the Planter could be used to help the Union Navy.

On the night of May 12, 1862, Smalls and other families boarded the Planter while the officers and crew were asleep in town. Smalls piloted the ship out of Charleston Harbor and surrendered it to the Union Navy. Captain Smalls was hailed as a hero.
Captain Robert Smalls joined the Union Navy and served as a pilot throughout the war. He also worked as a spy for the Union, gathering intelligence on Confederate movements. Captain Small’s bravery and dedication to the Union cause earned him the respect of his fellow soldiers and sailors.
After the war, Smalls returned to South Carolina and became involved in politics. He was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1868 and served for five terms. Smalls also served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872 and 1876.
Smalls was a strong advocate for the rights of African Americans. He worked to improve public education for black children and to promote economic opportunity for black adults. Smalls also spoke out against racism and violence against African Americans.
Smalls died on February 23, 1915, at the age of 75. He was buried with full military honors at the Beaufort National Cemetery. Small's legacy is one of courage, determination, and dedication to the cause of freedom. He is remembered as one of the greatest heroes of the Civil War.
